For a general introduction to ski mountaineering take a look at these articles by Rob Collister,
a UIAGM International Mountain Guide and Eagle Ski Club member.

Alpine ski touring
With modern Alpine or Telemark touring equipment, you can travel almost anywhere on snow. When going uphill, you use 'skins', which stick to the bottom of your skis and stop you sliding back. Going downhill is hopefully a series of beautiful turns! Alpine skis can be released at the heel for walking upwards, but clip down for the descent. Telemark skiers have a free heel the whole time. The Eagle Ski Club arranges a several ski tours every year, typically in the Alps, Pyrenees or North America. These are usually based in pensions in the valley or catered Alpine huts.

Ski mountaineering
As a ski mountaineer, you use your skis to reach peaks and other mountaineering goals. Often there will be more technical climbing involved and scaling peaks may involve leaving skis or carrying them on your back for the last part of the ascent. The base for a ski mountaineering trip may be a mountain hut (catered or otherwise), a camp or a series of camps. Recent Eagle trips have included ascents of Mount Waddington in Canada (4019m), Tesi Lapchal in Nepal (5755m) and a traverse of Corsica as well as the more popular Ötztal and Chamonix-Zermatt high circuits.

Nordic ski touring
Using narrow skis with wax bases or skins, and often carrying tents and other gear on a pulk (a small sledge which you pull behind you), you can travel very long distances. Many nordic tours use the well-organised network of huts in Norway, whilst recent Eagle trips have included a traverse of Svalbard and an ascent of the highest mountain in the Arctic.

Instruction
Some trips are dedicated to instruction, either in basic off-piste skiing or telemarking skills, or in snow and mountain craft, avalanche and crevasse rescue, glacier travel, navigation and first aid.

Other ESC events
There is also a programme of UK events, including ski weekends in Scotland, walking and climbing weekends throughout the UK, and a slide show. These events provide an excellent opportunity to meet people and plan future trips. The AGM and supper party is held in London in October or November, (8th Nov 2008 @ 19:00.) Members' guests are always welcome at these meetings (although only members may take part in tours).
