Eagle Ski Club Training Grants

Criteria for award

Objectives
The Club makes some funds available for training grants each year (at the discretion of the Committee). The purpose of these grants is to encourage young members to develop ski-mountaineering skills and to encourage potential Club Leaders to undertake leader training. Grants will normally be for £100, but the Touring Committee may exceptionally award a higher or lower amount.

Criteria

  • Training Grants will only be made to those who have been members of the Club for at least one year at the time of applying; those who do not meet this criterion may still be eligible for other grants such as the Georgina Travers Fund or the Alpine Ski Club's Kenneth Smith Awards.

  • Grants will only be made to those attending designated Alpine, Off-piste, Telemark or Advanced Alpine Courses forming part of the Club's programme.

  • Preference for all grants will be given to members who have previously undertaken suitable training in map-reading, first aid and other relevant skills.

  • Two types of grant are offered:
Basic Training Grants – to attend an Alpine, Telemark or Off-piste Training Course.
Leader Training Grants – to attend an Advanced Alpine or Leader Training Course.

Basic Training Grants
Basic Training Grants will only be made to members under 35, who have not previously received any Training Grant. Preference for Basic Training Grants will be given to members with a mountaineering or climbing background applying to attend an off-piste or Telemark course, or to members with a skiing background applying to attend an Alpine Training Course.

Leader Training Grants
Leader Training Grants will only be made to members who have not previously received a Leader Training Grant. Those seeking a Leader Training Grant must agree, if accepted and following satisfactory completion of the course, to lead an unguided Club Tour within three years or as agreed with the Touring Secretary.
Preference for Leader Training Grants will be given to those who have already attended an Alpine or Off-piste Training Course or who are recommended as potential leaders by an existing Club Leader or Guide.

Application Procedure
Members wishing to apply for Training Grants should if possible apply by 1st December for the following season – using the application form available here – which should be sent or emailed to the Touring Secretary.
Applicants will be informed by 15th December whether or not their application has been successful. Exceptionally, the Touring Committee may reach an early decision if the member needs to make a commitment based on the outcome of the decision. Later applications will be considered only if funds are available.

Alpine Ski Club/Ski Club of Great Britain Training Grants

Nature of awards

The Alpine Ski Club is seeking applications for grants towards activities related to ski mountaineering within the framework of the Kenneth Smith Scholarship and the Memorial Adventure Fund. Entirely at the discretion of the ASC, grants can be provided for the following activities:

  1. Taking part in a serious ski mountaineering expedition which includes an element of exploration.

  2. Attending an approved training course in the full range of ski mountaineering skills.

  3. Carrying out a research project on an aspect of ski mountaineering.

  4. Other activities, which further the knowledge and practice of safe movement in the mountains on ski.

An approved training course is usually considered to be one under the direct supervision of a qualified mountain guide. Awards are especially but not exclusively for young skiers.

Currently the deadlines for applications are:

  • 31 October for the Kenneth Smith Award as this is usually but not exclusively given towards training.

  • 21 January for the Memorial Adventure Fund.

Further details and an application form can be found on the Alpine Ski Club website at www.alpineskiclub.org.uk/grants.htm.
