I recently found http://map.schweizmobil.ch/?lang=en as a useful source for online (and printable) Swiss topo maps. When using the print function, you can choose the scale including 1:10,000, 1:25,000 and 1:50,000.

Subject: Swiss Map Flash --> Swiss Map online
Dear customer,

We are pleased to announce the new Swiss Map online. Numerous customers’ wishes have been accommodated and we have deployed the latest technology for the use of geodata.

Swiss Map online offers you new all map scales and also high-resolution aerial photographs (orthofotos) of the whole of Switzerland. Division of the products into Swiss Map 25, 50 and 100 and into individual sections has been cancelled; the data is available on the Internet instead. As far as you are concerned, this means that you always have the very latest data at your fingertips and can automatically benefit from revisions.

The new Federal Act on Geoinformation has resulted in a significant price reduction, which we have passed on to you in full.

A year of the latest geodata is now available to you for only CHF 49. You can benefit from free and automatic updates for a whole year! Renewal for another year costs only CHF 29. In this way we can fully meet the numerous requests for permanent updates of the geo-data, so your Swiss Map online always stays up to date.

Naturally, you can continue to display hiking trails, calculate elevation profiles, make your own entries on the maps and now also on the aerial photographs with the help of graphics tools and exchange way points or routes with data from your own GPS receiver. A print function is also included and graphics can be saved.

Furthermore, it newly includes the whole SwitzerlandMobility route network, which also features the cycle paths.

Swiss Map online will be launched by the end of July 2011.

Kind regards

Thanks for posting Alan. Great news. The regional digital maps are (were) so expensive, but essential. I will wait to see how the new system works for mobile phones, where the regional maps are also expensive, but again, essential for me, as they can save a lot of time on the mountain especially on shorter or day walks. I suspect it will still be necessary to have the mobile phone maps stored on the phone, for safety reasons, but maybe their price will also come down.
