Safer ski touring

All participants on Scottish meets are responsible for ensuring that they are adequately equipped and experienced to take responsibility for themselves in the mountain environment. This should include adequate clothing, emergency equipment, transceiver, shovel and probe (as required by the conditions). In addition they should familiarise themselves with the forecast weather and avalanche conditions and plan their outings accordingly.

Unguided meets operate on the basis of "participative leadership". This involves self-responsibility in risk management, a collaborative ethos of consensus-building, good group communication, teamwork and working together. All participants are encouraged to play an active role in the team by working together, communicating with others and helping to build consensus around team objectives and conditions. Exercising a duty of care to others in the group and to other ski tourers at a level commensurate with your own current skill and experience level is also important.

Participants should familiarise themselves with the Leading Meets in Scotland guidance. In addition, the group might wish to use the Scottish Route Card, to leave an external contact, details of intended route plus the names and "In Case of Emergency" contact details of the participants.
